1] Why study with the University of London External System?

Besides, the External System is an opportunity for students to receive a University of London degree without having to move to London, either for teaching support or for the examinations.
The University of London External System was started in 1850 and has a reputation of being a system that promotes excellence in education across the world.

2] What is the relationship between the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of London?
The University of London was founded by the Royal Charter in 1836. It is one of Britain's largest universities and is a federation of Colleges and Institutes. Students who study for degrees at the Colleges and Institutes receive their degrees from the University of London.
The London School of Economics and Political Science - 'LSE' for short - is one of the teaching institutions that make up the University of London.
Further, the highly reputed LSE is a designated Lead College for the University of London External System
3] What is a Lead College?
A Lead College provides the academic inputs for the courses under the External System.
The Lead College sets the syllabus, provides a subject guide, prescribes the essential and reference texts, sets the examination papers and marks the final examinations
4] I hear that there is more than one route to the degree. Is that true? What are the routes for obtaining the degree through the External System?
The UoL degree can be obtained through three routes-the Access Route, the Diploma Route and the Degree Route.
If you are below 18 years of age and wish to commence your degree, the Access Route would be the option for you. It takes four years to complete the degree on this route. You will need to clear two foundation units successfully in the first year to enter the second year of your degree.
The Diploma Route is for students who do not make it directly to the University of London either because their schooling is from an Indian Board or because they do not have the required score in the IB or A levels system or because the University of London could not make them an offer. The Diploma Route allows you to register with a teaching institution that has been awarded the Permission to Teach status. The Diploma Route cannot be taken through independent study. The Diploma Route awards you with a Diploma after the first year. It takes a minimum of three years to complete the degree through this route inclusive of the one year Diploma. You have to be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for this route.
The Degree Route is for students who are eligible for a direct entry into the University of London but for some reason are unable to do so. It takes a minimum of three years to complete the degree through this route

5] Will an external student achieve the same academic standards as the regular students studying at London? And what will my Diploma/Degree Certificate say?
The Diploma in Economics or the Diploma in Social Sciences is awarded by the University of London to the external student approaching the degree through the Diploma Route. It is a stand alone qualification and is also equivalent to the first year of the degree. It takes a minimum of one year to obtain the Diploma.
The Degree can be obtained through three routes, The Access Route, the Diploma Route and the Degree Route. The degree can be obtained over a period of four years if you are an Access Route student and over three years if you are a Diploma or Degree Route student. The Degree is awarded to the external student, like to the regular students, by the University of London.
Upon successful completion of the course, the external student is awarded a University of London Diploma and or Degree.
The certificate states that the student has studied as an external student and carries the following extract from the Statutes of the University of London "Candidates granted degrees and other awards have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination." 6] What is the difference between a correspondence course & the UoL’s distance learning programme offered at RSIC?
Unlike a correspondence course, the distance learning programme of the UOL offered at RSIC is structured on the lines of a regular college teaching pattern, with daily classes, regular evaluation, frequent parent teacher interactions and an annual academic calendar that is followed.(View last year’s Academic Calendar)

7] What are the Diploma in Economics and the Diploma in Social Sciences?
The Diploma in Economics and the Diploma in Social Sciences are programmes of the University of London that award a stand alone qualification and are equivalent to the first year of the degree.
Students who successfully complete the Diploma in Economics or the Diploma in Social Sciences may continue to study for further two years in order to receive the relevant University of London Degree.
The Diploma programmes have been specifically designed by the London School of Economics and Political Science for students who cannot, do not or do not wish to gain direct entry into the University of London.
Institutions are awarded the Permission to Teach status by the University of London and the concerned Lead College. This applies only to the Diploma in Economics and the Diploma in Social Sciences.
8] What is the relationship between LSE and the Russell Square International College (RSIC)?
After careful scrutiny, Russell Square International College has been awarded the Permission to Teach status. This makes RSIC a teaching institution that has the permission to teach the Diploma in Economics and the Diploma in Social Sciences
RSIC can enroll students for the degree through the Diploma Route by conducting its own entrance tests. (Link to entrance test page)

10] What are the degrees offered at RSIC?
From the year 2008-09,RSIC offers the following degrees
- BSc in Accounting and Finance
- BSc in Banking and Finance
- BSc in Business
- BSc in Economics and Management
- BSc in Information Systems and Management.
You will have to do 12 Units for your degree.
You can decide on your degree after the first year but if you are on the Diploma Route, it is advised that you decide in the first year since you cannot change from the Diploma in Economics to the Diploma in Social Sciences once you have registered for either.

You will be provided adequate counseling on the subject choices available to you at the RSIC through the faculty and through representatives of the LSE when they visit us.
RSIC reserves the right to offer a subject(unit) depending upon a minimum number of enrollments for that subject (unit),
11] Why are these degrees called B.Sc degrees? Do I have to study natural science subjects too?
These degrees are called B.Sc degrees because they are degrees that emphasize on the scientific approach to knowledge.
No, you do not have to study natural science subjects but you will have to study Mathematics if your particular degree requires you to do so.
12] English has been the medium of instruction of my school education. Do I still have to sit an exam to prove my ability in English?
All students must be competent in English.
Educational institutions given the permission to teach the Diploma in Economics and the Diploma in Social Sciences, like the RSIC conduct their own entrance test for those enrolling through the Diploma Route as proof of the students proficiency in the subject.

13] I hear that the UoL degree is tough? Will I be able to cope?
The UoL degree, like any other high quality International degree is challenging. With regular attendance, consistent study and a strong motivation, all our students at RSIC have done us proud by doing well in their degrees.
14] I hear that the UoL degrees require a high Mathematical ability.
Not all degree combinations require a high mathematical ability.
Depending upon the degree of your choice, you could drop Mathematics, do a unit in basic Mathematics or do a more advanced unit in Mathematics.
Some of our students who dropped Mathematics after Std 10 coped very well with the Mathematics units in the UoL programme.
13] Can I pursue a local degree along with the UOL degree?
Yes, you may, provided that you can meet the attendance and course work requirements of the RSIC.
14] When and where will my final examinations be conducted?
Final examinations will be conducted by the British Council, in Mumbai in the months of May & June.
15] What are my options for further studies after completing my Diploma in Economics and Diploma in Social Sciences at the RSIC?
You could continue and finish the degree with us over the next two years
Should you have excellent marks in Grades 10 and 12 along with a good performance at RSIC in the first semester, you could apply for a transfer to the LSE as a regular student at LSE and complete the degree there.
Should you want to experience studying at the LSE, you could spend your second year at the LSE through admission to the General Course and come back to complete your degree with us at the third year.
You could also apply to other British Universities for a second Year transfer after checking their requirements.
16) What can I do after my Degree from the UoL at the RSIC?
You could apply for post graduate programmes in the U.K ,provided you meet the entry requirements for the university of your choice
